A brittle, lustrous hard, heavy, grey metal. Used in alloys having high melting points, high strenth and good ductility, in nuclear reactors, in aircraft and missile parts. Tantalum is a rare metal of restricted usefulness that occur in pegmatite dikes. Tantalum because of its great affinity for gases are widely used in vacuum tubes. Alloys are used for springs, gun barrels, saws, and dental & surgical instruments. Tantalum is also used in electrical wires beacuse of its tendency to follow electricity in one direction.
